- Tijdsperiode / vanaf welk jaar
- Complete zoekstrategie
- Korte uitleg ( 1 á 2 zinnen) mbt zoekstrategie
- Taalinperkingen

Darren C Greenwood
BMC Medical Research Methodology 2007, 7:48doi:10.1186/1471-2288-7-48
De conclusie is duidelijk: "Decisions placed on journal impact factors are potentially misleading where the uncertainty associated with the measure is ignored. This article proposes that caution should be exercised in the interpretation of journal impact factors and their ranks, and specifically that a measure of uncertainty should be routinely presented alongside the point estimate."

Invloed van bibliotheken op duur ziekenhuisverblijf
Via Krafty:
"Decreased Hospital Length of Stay Associated With Presentation of Cases at Morning Resport with Librarian Support." (J Med Libr Assoc 95(4) October 2007 381-7.
The authors decided to study whether a librarian and a computerized literature search at case discussion in residents' morning report affected hosptial charges, length of stay, and thirty day readmission rate. They found that the length of stay for cases in the librarian attended morning report group was 3 days while it was 5 days for the control group. The median hospital charges for the morning report group were $7045 while the control group's median charges were $10,663. However the number of readmissions within 30 days was not significantly different between the two groups.

Skeptical Medical Reference
In Library Philosophy and Practice june 2007:
Samuel T.C. Thompson en Rachel P. Thompson. Skeptical Medical Reference: Helping Patrons Find Critical Resources for Consumer Health Issues (html) / PDF
With the popularization of the Internet, there has been a vast proliferation of consumer health material available to the public. Unfortunately, this has only accelerated a pre-existing trend- the fact that much of the material made available is unproven, unreliable, or outright fraud. This requires librarians to make a choice: are they passive and uncritical dispensers of information or are they critical educators who help patrons choose the best information available? In this article we examine the issues facing librarians in this matter and presents skeptical materials that may help librarians to answer critical health questions.
Full-text

Factors influencing publication choice: why faculty choose open access
Biomedical Digital Libraries 2007,4:1 doi:10.1186/1742-5581-4-1
(full-text)
In an attempt to identify motivating factors involved in decisions to publish in open access and open archives (OA) journals, individual interviews with biomedical faculty members at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-Chapel Hill) and Duke University, two major research universities, were conducted. The interviews focused on faculty identified as early adopters of OA/free full-text publishing.
Conclusions
It
appears that publication quality is of utmost importance when choosing
publication venues in general, while free access and visibility are
specifically noted incentives for selection of OA journals. Therefore,
free public availability and increased exposure may not be strong
enough incentives for authors to choose open access over more
traditional and respected subscription based publications, unless the
quality issue is also addressed.

Abstract
This study investigates the potential impact of open access pricing on institutional journal expenditures in four subject fields at nine American colleges and universities. Three pricing models are evaluated: the conventional model (the current subscription model), the PLoS open access model (based on the fees currently charged by the Public Library of Science), and the equal-revenue open access model (which maintains current levels of total aggregate spending within each subject field). Because institutional disparities in publishing productivity are far greater than Institutional disparities in library holdings, the shift from a subscription-based model to either open access model would bring dramatic cost savings for most colleges and universities. At the same time, a small number of institutions - the top research universities - would pay a far higher proportion of the total aggregate cost.

Using the H-index to Rank Influential Information Scientists
(2006) Using the H-index to Rank Influential Information Scientists. Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology 57(9):pp. 1275-1278. Full-text via E-LIS
We apply a new bibliometric measure, the h-index (Hirsch, 2005), to the literature of information science. Faculty rankings based on raw citation counts are compared with those based on h-counts. There is a strong positive correlation between the two sets of rankings. We show how the h-index can be used to express the broad impact of a scholar’s research output over time in more nuanced fashion than straight citation counts.

Provides a historical background of citation analysis, ISI's citation databases, and the impact factor. Discusses the strengths and weaknesses of Web of Science and other more recent citation data sources (e.g., Scopus and Google Scholar), the impact of the Web on citation analysis, and the emergence of new citation-based research assessment measures (e.g., h-index). Argues that the use of multiple Web-based citation tools allows more accurate visualizations of scholarly communication networks. Also argues that publishing a journal article is now only the first step in disseminating one's work. '

Abstract
Over the last two decades, changes in technology have allowed academic medical center libraries to bring the world of biomedical information to the physician’s computer desktop. Because digital libraries have grown so rapidly and in so many ways, some clinicians may be uncertain about the services and resources that are available to them. This article explains how clinical faculty can best utilize their library to support their research and patient care. It addresses some of the most common myths about the “new” medical library, and it highlights innovations in library resources and services that can help physicians to better access, use and manage medical information.
Key Words: Medical libraries, academic medical centers, internet, information services, librarians, physicians, professional practice, continuing medical education, information management.

Googling for a diagnosis--use of Google as a diagnostic aid: internet based study Hangwi Tang, Jennifer Hwee Kwoon Ng
Objective To determine how often searching with Google (the most popular search engine on the world wide web) leads doctors to the correct diagnosis.
Design Internet based study using Google to search for diagnoses; researchers were blind to the correct diagnoses.
Setting One year's (2005) diagnostic cases published in the case records of the New England Journal of Medicine.
Cases 26 cases from the New England Journal of Medicine; management cases were excluded.
Main outcome measure Percentage of correct diagnoses from Google searches (compared with the diagnoses as published in the New England Journal of Medicine).
Results Google searches revealed the correct diagnosis in 15 (58%, 95% confidence interval 38% to 77%) cases.
Conclusion As internet access becomes more readily available in outpatient clinics and hospital wards, the web is rapidly becoming an important clinical tool for doctors. The use of web based searching may help doctors to diagnose difficult cases.
Wikis, blogs and podcasts: a new generation of Web-based tools for virtual collaborative clinical practice and education
BMC Medical Education 2006,

(Full-text op BioMed Central)
If effectively deployed, wikis, blogs and podcasts could offer a way to
enhance students', clinicians' and patients' learning experiences, and
deepen levels of learners' engagement and collaboration within digital
learning environments. Therefore, research should be conducted to
determine the best ways to integrate these tools into existing
e-Learning programmes for students, health professionals and patients,
taking into account the different, but also overlapping, needs of these
three audience classes and the opportunities of virtual collaboration
between them. Of particular importance is research into novel
integrative applications, to serve as the "glue" to bind the different
forms of Web-based collaborationware synergistically in order to
provide a coherent wholesome learning experience.

|
The October 2006 issue of the Journal of the Medical Library Association (JMLA) will contain the first installment in a new series of case studies. These cases will provide narrative and insight from expert commentators drawn from librarianship, informatics, medicine, research, and other areas that inform the development of a given case situation. This feature will share commentary and practices for a variety of scenarios with the intent of prompting discussion of issues facing health sciences librarianship as a developing profession and the development of potential solutions. |
Gelijk met met oktober nummer is de eerste case study (Expert synthesis of the literature to support critical care decision-making)
online gegaan.

' This paper examines how the adoption of a subject-specific library service has changed the way in which its users interact with a digital library. The LitMiner text-analysis application was developed to enable biologists to explore gene relationships in the published literature. The application features a suite of interfaces that enable users to search PubMed as well as local databases, to view document abstracts, to filter terms, to select gene name aliases, and to visualize the co-occurrences of genes in the literature. At each of these stages, LitMiner offers the functionality of a digital library. Documents that are accessible online are identified by an icon. Users can also order documents from their institutions library collection from within the application. In so doing, LitMiner aims to integrate digital library services into the research process of its users.'

Health literacy
Why is health literacy so critical?
Health literacy is an essential life skill for individuals:
It may help individuals seek and use information and take control over their health.
Health literacy is a public health imperative:
building health literacy improves overall population health.
Health literacy is an essential part of social capital:
low health literacy is a strong contributor to health inequalites.
Health literacy is a critical economic issue:
A US study estimated that low health literacy costs the US economy 73 billion dollars per year.

Interessant boek over EBM
Brown, M, et al. Evidence-based to value-based medicine.
Evidence-based medicine: Classifying the evidence from clinical trials – the need to consider other dimensions
Critical Care 2006, 10:232 doi:10.1186/cc5045
| Published | 4 October 2006 |
Abstract
The current approach to assessing the quality of evidence obtained from clinical trials focuses on three dimensions: the quality of the design (with double-blinded randomised controlled trials representing the highest level of such design); the statistical power (beta) and the level of significance (alpha). While these aspects are important, we argue that other significant aspects of trial quality impinge upon the truthfulness of the findings: biological plausibility, reproducibility and generalisability. We present several recent studies in critical care medicine where the design, beta and alpha components of the study are seemingly satisfactory but where the aspects of biological plausibility, reproducibility and generalisability show serious limitations. Accordingly, we argue for more reflection, definition and consensus on these aspects of the evaluation of evidence.

Wat is Google nu weer van plan?
Aardig artikel uit de ALA hoek:
C&RL News, September 2006 Vol. 67, No.8
' Google is a whirlwind of innovation. In the period between April and
June 2006, Google introduced Google Calendar, Google Notebook, Google
Trends, Google Checkout, Google Spreadsheet, and a new version of
Google Desktop with Google Gadgets. All the while Google continues to
tinker with its flagship search product. With nearly 50 percent of the
market, Google is the dominant force on the search engine landscape.
Because of this, no matter how you personally feel about Google as a
librarian, the one position that none of us can afford to take is
choosing to ignore what Google is doing and plans to do. Put simply,
librarians need to be Google experts.'

| ' The only free resource capturing a significant number of link outs is the free link to PubMed. This reflects the importance placed on traditional medical literature searching by the ADL clinical user base. Institutional affiliates access free resources through the ADL with the second highest frequency of all the user groups. Finally, in analyzing use of free resources, it is important to note the overall limitations of this survey. While link outs are excellent indicators of frequency of use they do not provide any information about the ultimate usefulness of the resource being accessed. Further studies would need to examine not only the quantitative use of resources, but also their qualitative importance to the user. ' |

Three options for citation tracking: Google Scholar, Scopus and Web of Science
Three options for citation tracking: Google Scholar, Scopus and Web of Science
| Background: Researchers turn to citation tracking to find the most influential articles for a particular topic, and to see how often their own published papers are cited. For years researchers looking for this type of information had only one resource to consult: the Web of Science. In 2004, two competitors emerged - Scopus and Google Scholar. The research reported here uses citation analysis in an observational study examining these three databases; comparing citation counts for articles from two disciplines (oncology and condensed matter physics) and two years (1993 and 2003). Methods: Eleven journal titles with varying impact factors were selected from each discipline (oncology and condensed matter physics) using the Journal Citation Reports (JCR). All articles published in the selected titles were retrieved for both years, and a stratified random sample of articles was chosen, resulting in four sets of articles. During the week of November 7-12, 2005 we extracted the citation counts for each research article from the three sources. The actual citing references for a subset of the articles published in 2003 were also gathered from each of the three sources. Results: For oncology 1993, Web of Science returned the highest average number of citations, 45.3. Scopus returned the highest average number of citations (8.9) for oncology 2003. Web of Science returned the highest number of citations for condensed matter physics 1993 and 2003 (22.5 and 3.9 respectively). The data showed a significant difference in the mean citation rates between all pairs of resources except between Google Scholar and Scopus for condensed matter physics 2003. For articles published in 2003, Google Scholar returned the largest amount of unique citing material for oncology and Web of Science returned the most for condensed matter physics. Conclusions: This study did not identify any one of these three resources as the answer to all citation tracking needs. Scopus showed strength in providing citing literature for 2003 oncology articles, while Web of Science produced more citing material for 2003 and 1993 condensed matter physics, and 1993 oncology articles. Unique material was returned by all three tools. Our data indicate that the question of which tool provides the most complete set of citing literature may depend on the subject and publication year of a given article. |
Purchasing online journal access for a hospital medical library
Purchasing online journal access for a hospital medical library: how to identify value in commercially available products
| Background: Medical practice today requires evaluating large amounts of information which should be available at all times. This information is found most easily in a digital form. Some information has already been evaluated for validity (secondary sources) and some is in unevaluated form (primary sources). In order to improve access to digital information, the School of Clinical Medicine and Research at the University of the West Indies and Queen Elizabeth Hospital decided to enhance the library by offering online full text medical articles and evidence based medicine sources. The aim of this paper is to describe how we evaluate the relative value of online journal commercial products available for a small hospital and medical school library. Methods: Three reference standards were chosen to represent the ideal list of core publications for a broad range of medical care: Brandon/Hill selected list of journals for the small medical library and the academic medical library core journal collection chosen for the Florida State University College of Medicine Medical Library. Six commercially available collections were compared to the reference standards and to the current paper journal subscription list as regards to number of journals matched and cost per journal matched. Ease of use and presence of secondary sources were also considered. Results: The cost per journal matched ranged from US$ 81 to $3194. Because of their low subscription prices, the Biomedical Reference Collection and Proquest products were the most cost beneficial. However, they provided low coverage of the ideal lists.(12 -17% and 21-32% respectively) and contained significant embargoes on current editions, were not user friendly and contained no secondary sources. The Ovid products overcame these difficulties, providing higher coverage of the ideal lists(14-47%) but were in a much higher cost -benefit range. Conclusions: After considering costs, benefits, ease of use, embargoes, presence of secondary sources (ACP Journal Club, DARE), the Ovid Brandon Hill Plus Collection was the best choice for our hospital considering our budget . However; the option to individually select our own journal list from Ovid and pay per journal has a certain appeal as well. |

Journal of Electronic Resources in Medical Libraries
Marcus P. Zillman zegt erover in augustus 2005: 'The Journal of Electronic Resources in Medical Libraries is a peer-reviewed professional journal devoted to the access, evaluation, and management of electronic resources in the medical library environment. This journal will be an essential resource for academic medical school libraries, hospital libraries, and other health sciences libraries. The material in the Journal of Electronic Resources in Medical Libraries will complement articles published in Medical Reference Services Quarterly (also edited by M. Sandra Wood), which highlights the reference and bibliographic instruction aspects of electronic resources. This will be added to Healthcare Resources 2005 Internet MiniGuide. '
