Je statistieken bekijken via Highwire

Tip van Sjors Clemens:
Ga naar de Highwire portal. Maak een account aan en ga naar het tabblad My Highwire. Daar kun je het mailadres waarmee je de tijdschriften hebt geregistreerd, koppelen aan je Highwire-account. Ga daarna naar het tabblad institutions, kies helemaal onderaan voor "Associate New Subscription with your HighWire Account" en koppel de tijdschriften die het systeem voor je gevonden heeft (op basis van het emailadres) door de gebruikersnaam en wachtwoord op te geven. Dan kun je al je statistieken bekijken. Voordelen: Je hoeft niet de diverse sites langs en je kunt ook nog in één actie het IP-adres adres wijzigen van al deze titels, nieuwe titels registreren of zien welke tijdschriften op jouw ip-dres beschikbaar zijn.

PhysMath Central

BiomedCentral heeft een nieuw platform in het leven geroepen: Physmath Central. Open Access natuurlijk, en van hoge kwaliteit (is de bedoeling:

'PhysMath Central is an independent publishing platform operated by BioMed Central committed to providing immediate open access to peer-reviewed physics and mathematics research.'

Er is net een eerste tijdschrift geopend voor inzendingen: PMC Physics A.
Er zullen er meer volgen.

Open Medicine

Nieuw open access tijdschrift: Open Medicine. Waarschijnlijk een afsplitsing van CMAJ (voorheen: Canadian Medical Association Journal) maar dat zeggen ze niet met evenveel woorden :-)

Nummer 1 van 2007 is uit.

The mission of Open Medicine is to facilitate the equitable dissemination of high-quality health research; to promote international dialogue and collaboration on health issues; to improve clinical practice; and to expand and deepen the understanding of health and health care.

The Journal will examine issues relevant to health and clinical medicine both in Canada and internationally.

Open Acces news zegt: 'Open Medicine launched today, but already the web site is overwhelmed with traffic.  Give it a few hours and try again.  While you’re waiting, read some of the voluminous press coverage.'

Einde van de ScienceDirect Web Editions

Elsevier heeft het toch maar goed met ons medisch bibliothecarissen voor. Speciaal om ons een plezier te doen, en naar aanleiding van uitgebreide feedback van ons, worden de gratis Web editions volgend jaar maart gestopt. Zo meldt ons Joep Verheggen, director van ScienceDirect in een email die vorige week bij ons als klant van de Webeditions binnenkwam.

Wij bibliothecarissen schijnen namelijk keer op keer te hebben aangegeven dat we toegang willen tot meer e-content. En omdat Elsevier zo blij is dat wij zo constructief met hen meedenken, bieden ze ons een aantal waardevolle alternatieven aan die wel aansluiten op onze behoeftes en ons budget (Sic!). Dat kan natuurlijk niet meer gratis zoals voorheen, maar ach, een kniesoor die zich daar aan stoort!

Overeenkomst Elsevier en HHMI over Cell Press tijdschriften

Nieuws van het Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI): Elsevier en het HHMI hebben een overeenkomst afgesloten dat de Cell Press tijdschriften na een half jaar toegankelijk komen via PubMed Central. Vanaf september 2007.

'As part of the agreement, HHMI will pay Elsevier for the depositing service. Individual scientists will not be charged and HHMI will make quarterly payments to Elsevier based on the number of articles published.'

blackwell is ook begonnen met een blaadje voor de bibliotheken: "librarynews" . Het eerste nummer voor 2007 is een themanummer Medicine and health: dit is de PDF versie , mocht je interesse hebben en hem niet in je emailbus hebben ontvangen.

CONCLUSIONS: Video game skill correlates with laparoscopic surgical skills. Training curricula that include video games may help thin the technical interface between surgeons and screen-mediated applications, such as laparoscopic surgery. Video games may be a practical teaching tool to help train surgeons.

Background: Internet psychology services are rapidly increasing and that implies online assessment. To guarantee the results of these new online evaluation procedures, it is necessary to have reliable and valid assessment tools.

Conclusions: Further research should be carried out to confirm these data, but our work supports the online use of both assessment tools. The psychometric properties of the online version of GHQ-28 is similar to the paper-and-pencil and we can recommend its utilization in a Web environment. In contrast, SCL-90-R can only be recommended as a global index for psychological distress, using the Global Severity Index (GSI), not necessarily its subscales; and it should be considered that the online scores were lower than the ones with the paper-and-pencil version.

RSS voor de medicus

In Medisch Contact (jaargang 61 nummer 47, p. 1981) stond in een Scoop bericht een handig overzicht van RSS-feeds speciaal voor artsen,  te vinden op RSS4medics . Er wordt op gewezen dat de arts de inhoud van medische tijdschriften zoals NEJM en BMJ zelf  via RSS kan bij houden. Alle feeds van medische tijdschriften zijn verzameld door een Amerikaanse medische bibliotheek , de Ebling Library van de University of Wisconsin-Madison.

In de Volkskrant van vanochtend een artikel over BSL dat door PCM te koop wordt aangeboden. Volgens de Volkskrant is Springer bereidt 50 miljoen euro voor BSL te betalen.

Aktie van de ZBM tegen verandering copyright

Ik lees net op de weblog van de Duitse med. bibliotheken dat de ZB Köln een aktie is gestart om eindgebruikers bewust te maken van de gevaren van een verandering in de wetgeving betreffende electronische leveringen van kopieën. Ze ontvangen bij hun electronische kopie een mededeling: “Wilt U binnenkort 30 Euro betalen voor een artikel?”

Op de homepage van de ZBMed staat een oproep aan de gebruikers om NU te handelen.

UK versie van PubMed Central gelanceerd

Vandaag is de UK versie van PubMed Central gelanceerd.

' Based on PubMed Central (PMC), the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature, UK PubMed Central (UKPMC) provides a stable, permanent, and free-to-access online digital archive of full-text, peer-reviewed research publications.'

Press release  new Open Access journal: 

'Journal of Global Health Protection seeks high-quality submissions from academic, industrial, clinical practice, public health, and government research and planning sectors of original research articles, reviews, commentaries, and perspectives on new and emerging threats to human health. The main areas of interest are emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, hazardous chemicals and poisons, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, natural and man-made disasters, emerging environmental hazards, and emergency preparedness and response.'

The Journal will publish online and in print in 2007 on a quarterly schedule and will become monthly in the future.

Artikelen vanaf 2006 zitten er in. Helaas is de link naar de uitgever voor de full text nog niet toegevoegd. De redactie berichtte dat dit wel op de planning staat.

'Journal of Medical Case Reports will consider any original case report that expands the field of general medical knowledge.'

Ik lees net in de feed van Huisarts & Wetenschap dat de redactiecommissie van H&W is opgestapt vanwege onenigheid met de NHG?!

Eea had blijkbaar van doen met de manier van publiceren van de zgn. NHG standaarden.

Source Code for Biology and Medicine

Source Code for Biology and Medicine is een online tijdschrift uit de BioMed Central stal.
Het bestaat nu twee maanden en er zijn 8 artikelen in verschenen.

'The journal's aim is to publish source code for distribution and use in the public domain in order to advance biological and medical research. Through this dissemination, it may be possible to shorten the time required for solving certain computational problems for which there is limited source code availability or resources.'

BioMed Central Update

BioMed Central geeft een regelmatig een Update uit. Dit is die van 28 november .

Daar wordt o.a. in aangekondigd dat ze aan ' Smart spelling checking' gaan doen:

Op 30 november is Journal of visualized experiments (JoVE) uitgekomen: an online research journal for publishing visualized (video-based) biological experiments.

Journal of Visualized Experiments is een peer-reviewed open Access tijdschrift gericht op video's met/van biologische experimenten.

Wiley buys Blackwell shares

Benoit haalt een Medlib-L artikel aan op de  Euromedlib blog in zijn log Wiley buys Blackwell shares:

' John Wiley & Sons, Inc. announced today that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the outstanding shares of Blackwell Publishing (Holdings) Ltd., one of the world's foremost academic and professional publishers. The purchase price of £572 million will be financed with a combination of debt and cash. The transaction will be implemented through a U.K. Scheme of Arrangement. Wiley has received irrevocable commitments from the principal shareholders of Blackwell Publishing to sell their shares to Wiley. The companies anticipate that the transaction will close early in 2007.'

Nu maar hopen dat dat geen gedoe geeft met de toegang tot de elektronische tijdschriften: Blackwell heeft ook juist zijn tijdschriften weggehaald bij Ingenta... 

Maar er is wel een voordeel:

Ingentaconnect heeft juist een pilot afgerond: vanaf nu zijn de full-text artikelen in hun bestand via Google Scholar aanklikbaar (mits je een abonnement via hen hebt natuurlijk):

IJBS: International Journal of Biomedical Sciences

Er is een nieuw open acces tijdschrift uit: International Journal of Biomedical Sciences peer-reviewed en uitgegeven door de World Enformatika Society. 

De eerste 3 nummers zijn inmiddels uit, althans, er staan 21 nummers full-text: 10 artikelen per nummer, en  1 enkel artikel voor nummer 3. Waarschijnlijk stellen  ze niet zozeer een nummer samen, als wel tellen tot 10 en beginnen dan een nieuw issue. Kan. Het zijn alleen inhoudelijke artikeen, geen editiorials, ' los nieuws'  of boekbesprekingen

Open Access bij High Wire

HighWire Press is een divisie van de Stanford University Libraries. Zij produceren online versions van tijdschriften met een hoge impact. HighWire Press host de grootste repository met vrije full-text artikelen op het gebied van de 'Life Science' : bijna anderhalf miljoen artikelen uit 271 journals.
Ze publiceren een handige lijst met daarin na hoeveel tijd een tijdschrift vrijgegeven is voor Open Acces

Predictors of publication: characteristics of submitted manuscripts associated with acceptance at major biomedical journals

In de Medical Journal of Australie is onlangs een studie verschenen die zijn licht laat schijnen over mogelijke oorzaken voor het bekende probleem van de publication bias.

Bij 3 toonaangevende tijdschriften (BMJ, Lancet en Annals of Internal Medicine) werd nagegaan in hoeverre aangeboden manuscripten (original research) werden geaccepteerd voor publicatie.

Resultaten van de studie bevestigen deels al bekende oorzaken :

Manuscripts with higher methodological quality were more likely to be published, but those reporting statistically significant results were no more likely to be published than those without, suggesting that the source of publication bias is not at the editorial level. This confirms previous findings at a single, large, general biomedical journal with a high impact factor.11 In our study, the proportion of submitted manuscripts reporting statistically significant results far outnumbered those reporting statistically non-significant results, corroborating previous findings that suggest investigators may fail to submit negative studies

Opvallend, en althans voor mij nieuw (maar dat kan ook met mijn beperkte inzichten te maken hebben) was de volgende conclusie :

There appears to be an editorial bias towards accepting manuscripts whose corresponding author lives in the same country as that of the publishing journal. Other studies have found a similar association, but did not control for differences in submissions to journals by nationality,30 or compared nationality of authors and reviewers only and did not adjust for other aspects of the submitted manuscripts

Nieuw Canadees medische tijdschrift

The journal of the Canadian Medical Association, CMAJ,  heeft begin februari 2006 de redactie ontslagen (BMJ 2006;332: 503) na een geschil over journalistieke onafhankelijkheid. Die redactie is van plan een nieuw ' open acces' tijdschrift op te zetten: Open Medicine. "Canadian health and clinical medicine journal dedicated to furthering integrity, independence, and open access in scholarly publishing," .

NPG journals to open access to online archives

Nature Publishing Group (NPG) is pleased to announce that its academic and society journals will be opening access to all online content published before January 2003.  The archives will be accessible from January 2007.  

This policy helps clarify content associated with a site license.  From
January 2007, site license access to any NPG publication will include
content from the current year plus a four-year rolling archive, with the exception of those journals which already offer an open archive after 12 months.

The decision to open the journal archives has been made jointly by NPG and by the societies for whom we publish.  Making each journal's older content freely accessible will encourage wider usage.  The policy also helps to address the issue of perpetual access to archives of society-owned journals that transfer between publishers.

The society-owned NPG journals which already open their archives on a 12-month rolling basis are unaffected by this policy change.  

For Nature journals, as we have previously announced (see "Nature
Publishing Group introduces post-cancellation rights to licensed web
content", September 2005), a site license starting in 2007 will include
content from the current year plus a four-year rolling archive. Archive content not included in the license agreement will be available to purchase. However, site licenses starting in 2006 will have post-cancellation rights to all the current licensed content (e.g. back to 1997).

Public Library of Science in financiële problemen

Een nieuwsartikel uit het laatste issue van Nature onthult dat de Public Library of Science (Plos) in ernstige financiële problemen verkeert. Plos heeft moeten erkennen dat het zwaar leunt op giften om de begroting rond te krijgen. Om de problemen op te lossen is oa besloten de auteursbijdrage te verhogen van $1.500 naar $ 2.500. Nature is uiteraard van mening dat dit uitgeefmodel (de auteur betaalt) van begin af aan niet realistisch was, en de bijdrage van $1.500 veel te laag. Blijft jammer dat dit vlaggeschip van de open access beweging nu blijkbaar in zwaar weer terecht gekomen is!

In maart 2006 is het eerste nummer uitgekomen van: *Evidence Based Library and Information Practice*.

EBLIP is open access en peer reviewed, uitgegeven door de Metropolitan detroit medical library group

Er zijn inmiddels twee nummers uitgekomen: nummer 3 en 4 staan al op stapel.

Evidence-Based Child Health: A Cochrane Review Journal

Nieuw tijdschrift van Wiley: Evidence-Based Child Health: A Cochrane Review Journal.

Aims and Scope
Evidence-Based Child Health: A Cochrane Review Journal will present new or substantially updated systematic literature reviews from The Cochrane Library that are relevant to child health. These reviews will be of interest to practitioners, parents, patients, and other child health advocates. The aim of the journal is to allow readers to inform their clinical decision making and policy development with the highest quality research evidence available. Each issue of Evidence-Based Child Health will refer to a recent issue of The Cochrane Library. It will present a list by specialty of all child-relevant reviews in that issue, with links to the reviews' abstracts. From these, 5-10 reviews on topics that are controversial, recommend a change in practice, or for which particularly strong evidence exists will be highlighted. These reviews will be fully published in the journal, accompanied by their structured abstract. An expert commentary or editorial will accompany 2-3 key reviews that deserve particular attention. To promote greater appeal to parents, patients, and policy makers, concise, easily understood and interesting synopses will also accompany each key review.

Open Access voor door de overheid betaald onderzoek

Als wetenschappelijk onderzoek door de overheid is betaald, moeten de resultaten gratis op internet komen, aldus een Amerikaans wetsvoorstel. Uitgevers zijn mordicus tegen.

Het wetsvoorstel Federal Research Public Access Act of 2006 (FRPAA) is vorige week gepresenteerd door senatoren John Cornyn en Joe Lieberman.

Backfiles medische tijdschriften bij Welcome

De Wellcome Trust, , de  National Library of Medicine  (NLM)  en een aantal uitgevers van medische tijdschriften zijn al ruim anderhalf jaar een  Medical Journals Backfiles Digitisation Project van plan: gratis toegang tot bijna 200 jaar medische research.

JISC, heeft er vandaag een persbericht uitgegeven over uitgegeven.

BioMed Central Research Awards 2006

BioMed Central looft een prijs van  $5000 uit voor een onderzoeker die in een van hun meer dan 150 tijdschriften een artikel over een origineel onderzoek naar een belangwekkend biologisch of medisch onderwerp schrijft.

Achtergrond is natuurlijk het stimuleren tot het publiceren in 'open access' tijdschriften, en terecht.
